WHAT’s ON:

Events, gatherings and other community news:

To the Business and Property Owners of Richmond Hill,

We are writing to you as fellow stakeholders in our local area — an area that has long been valued for its welcoming atmosphere, quality cafés and restaurants, and its reputation as a pleasant and respectable place to live, work, and visit.

Recently, a growing number of alcohol- and gambling-focused establishments have begun to operate, or are proposed to operate, within close proximity to our precinct.
While we recognise the role that diverse businesses can play in a local economy, there is increasing concern about the cumulative impact these particular uses are having on the tone, safety, and long-term appeal of the area.

Local residents and business owners have reported frequent disturbances including loud music, shouting late into the night, public urination, and aggressive revving of car engines.
These issues are affecting the day-to-day enjoyment of the neighbourhood and, for some residents, have created a genuine sense of unease where there was once a calm and vibrant community atmosphere.

From a commercial perspective, there is also concern that an over-concentration of such venues may undermine the area’s brand and desirability—potentially discouraging families, visitors, and higher-value tenants, and reducing foot traffic to businesses that rely on a relaxed and welcoming environment.

We believe there is real value in coming together as shop owners and property owners to:
• Share information and ideas on how best to maintain the area’s positive image
• Explore strategies that support diverse, high-quality businesses
• Protect property values and encourage sustainable, long-term profitability
• And engage constructively with the municipality and relevant authorities where appropriate.

By working collaboratively, we can help ensure that future development strengthens—rather than erodes—the character that has made this area successful and enjoyable.
We welcome the opportunity to connect, exchange views, and discuss practical ways forward. If you are interested in participating in a collective discussion or meeting, please consider reaching out so we can begin this conversation together.

Thank you for your time and for your ongoing investment in our local community.
Shalom, Grant and Richard

Hi! Hallo! Molweni!

PLEASE TAKE NOTE:
This is the SRA patroller number 079 905 9009. This is the number to be used to phone or to WhatsApp the patroller. Any questions, please feel free to ask. Thank you.

Welcome to the Richmond Hill SRA webpage. This Richmond Hill (to distinguish from others around the world), is mainly a residential suburb and is part of the CBD of Port Elizabeth located in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa.

Although it also features a number of businesses, the suburb is second to the oldest residential area in South Africa. It is also the largest historical residential area in South Africa and as such lodges roughly 232 hectares in Nelson Mandela Bay Metro.

Old suburbs are subjected to decay and neglect but the property owners of Richmond Hill decided that these adverse influences and perceptions can be stopped by becoming involved in the preservation and improvement of our valuable heritage.

Old as it may be, do not discount our funky and trendy world-renowned restaurants in Stanley Street! A place to meet your friends and view the famous, but also a place to sit back and relax on the pavements with your favourite dish or cuppa!

On these pages you will find all the information on how the process of improvement and preservation developed. You will find how the various private initiatives were and still are executed to protect our amazingly vibrant and trendy suburb! In addition, if your are a resident or property owner, you will find all the info on how to get involved in this dynamic process!

* The Richmond Hill Special Rates Area is a Non Profit Company and because it is a business, all content here and on related social media pages are conducted in English, the business language of South Africa.
